Ensuring our campus is a diverse, equitable and inclusive place is a priority of the University and College. We have made great strides during this first year of the strategic plan, but there is much more to be done. Below are some highlights from our DEI Implementation Committee of what was accomplished this year:
- A DEI Student Advisory Board was launched this semester, with 27 graduate and undergraduate students from around the College serving to help advise the Implementation Committee and College leadership.
- Training for faculty, staff, graduate students and College leadership was conducted throughout the year on topics including unconscious bias, inclusive teaching, cultural competency and using privilege honorably.
- Events that have helped encourage inclusivity and spur conversation have been held, including lectures by distinguished speakers such as General Colin Powell and author Margot Lee Shetterly, and community-building activities such as Positive Chalking and Write-On: Messages of Inclusivity.
- Physical spaces have been evaluated for inclusivity, resulting in a Reflection Room for students, Lactation Rooms for the entire community, and an assessment for ADA compliance.
